Blue Wall Project 001
Balanced Parameters
Ryu Min Soo
June 5th - July 12th 2023
The first exhibition as a part of the Blue Wall Project is ‘Balanced Parameters’ by 3D artist ‘Ryu Minsoo’. Ryu’s work began by researching the correlation between social hierarchy and the iconographic analysis of memorial monuments while working with digital data processing and 3D printing mechanism. The work <Trophy study: Balance> of this exhibition referenced the performance of Hong Kong Balance Artist ‘Wang Yekun.’ Ryu found similarities between the mechanical principle of building a cube with an FDM 3D printer moving vertically and Wang’s feats of object stacking through his incredible stabilization talents, which led Ryu to translate his analysis into the 3D printed ‘trophies.’ The artist compares the traditional beauty of balance and unity required from statues or monuments to his 3D-printed trophies made out of random objects stacked precariously yet having a perfect center of gravity. The artwork <Trophy study: Balance> aims to experiment with the artistry of physical balance deviating from the original purpose and definition of a monument.
About the Artist: Ryu Minsoo
The contemporary artist Ryu Minsoo likes to extract the memories of objects, a person, or a past event that has likely to be forgotten or considered the banality of life. Ryu rejuvenates his chosen subject and adds renewal value to them in a subtle satirical manner. Ryu's recent work dismantles the traditional meaning of monuments and statues and reproduces them in a new state, highlights ethical dilemmas, and asks us axiological questions. As a sculpture artist, his art practices are often about relocation or replacement, conjoining with his 3D printing technology. Ryu Minsoo lives and works in Seoul, South Korea, and received his Bachelor of Contemporary Art from Konkuk University in 2020.
